Technology How to use technology to be happier and more focused

Technology How to use technology to be happier and mora focusedTechnology How to use technology to be happier and more focusedWere incredibly distracted by digital technologies. One study found thataverage smartphone user today unlocks their phone 150 times a day. Each time you unlock yur phone, you spend about a minute checking it. So thats the equivalent of about two and a half hours of your day or 38 days a year. The impact of that kind of distraction on our work is mind-boggling.Technology is here to stay, its ubiquitous, and it has a lot of potential to make things better. Butwe must platzset boundaries and acquire new skill sets to successfully navigate the digital era. Here are some practical strategies we can use to deal with technology at work and be happier and more productive.Hide your phone If you have your phone by your workstation or anywhere you can see it, your brain anticipates that you might get a message. That makes you less focused, less productive, and less connecte d to the work or the person to whom youre speaking.Put your phone behind your laptop screen while youre working or in your bag while youre talking to a coworker. Make sure it is out of your physical and visual space. If you have it in your back pocket, and it might vibrate, or you have it on the table where you can see the screen light up, even if you dont touch it, it could interfere with your productivity.Take a tech-free break One study found that workers who took breaks without their phones recharged faster and had less stress returning to work than those who took their phones with them.If youre going to take a break, dont use your phone to catch up with friends or surf Facebook. Take time to refocus and set your eyes on something other than a screen.Create boundariesSet intentions and create reminders to help you develop willpower and habits. Think through the when, the where, and the why youre using technology. Not only does that make you more thoughtful, but it also refuels you r well being.Use data to set goalsIm a numbers person.Apps that track your behaviors can help you change them. Its really helpful to have data to help you figure out what kind of changes you need to make and whether youre making progress toward your goal.Create positive habitsPart of why tech is so addictive is that its so good at keeping us accountable and drawing us back in. That makes technology great at helping us form habits. When were able to see and understand whats happening, it illuminates howwe might be able to grow. For example, I use technology to track my fitness.Train your brainWhen we hear notifications on our phone, like Pavlovs dogs, we react. It activates our flight-or-fight response. We feel like theres a threat coming toward us.Instead of thinking about things that interrupt us as threats, we want to think about them as challenges. We want to train our minds to outsmart technology to get ahead.Fuel your happinessHow you use technology matters. If youre using tech t o zone out, it needs to go. If youre using it to tune in and become more thoughtful, its amazing.Technology can also be incredibly powerfully to help us connect with our social support system, which is the greatest predictor of long-term happiness and success.Prepare for whats nextRight now, a lot of people worryabout smartphone usage because it affects them every day. In the future, we might be more concerned about the Internet of Things. Its useful to think two steps down the road.Whats the trajectory were setting ourselves up on? What are we inviting into our lives? What are we helping create? How does our behavior influence the market thats emerging?Amy Blankson is the co-founder of GoodThinkand the author of two books, including the recently released The Future of Happiness. As told to Kirsten Salyer.

How to Deal with a Terrible Boss

How to Deal with a Terrible Boss Everyone, at some point in their life, has had to deal with this situation. You wake up every day dreading work not because of the job, or the colleagues, or the customersbut the boss. How do you deal with him or her? For many, the answer is simply quitting. In fact, theres a well-known saying about how people dont leave companies, they leave managers, and this is extremely true. I had a friend whose manager was so unprofessional and made each work day so unbearable that my friend ended up quitting. Even though she enjoyed her position and made a decent amount of money, the thought of having to continue working under her bosss leadership was unbearable and just not worth it.Yet, in todays job market, not everyone can afford to make this type of decision. So, youre stuck at the job with a barely tolerable boss. What do you do? Below are two different types of annoyi ng bosses and how to deal with each one1. The GhostThis is the boss whos never there, or at least never there when you need the partie. You pull your eight-hour shift and then some, putting the files in order or the store back together. You know your boss is somewhere in the building, doing something vaguely related to his/her job, but isnt there something more helpful this individual could do?The fact is, quite a few of these bosses fall into two subcategories. One is the boss who doesnt want to be there. This is the boss who likely hates coming to work as much as you and avoids responsibility like the plague because he or she simply doesnt want to do it. With this type of boss, your best bet is to ask for help. If none is available, and you really feel this person is shirking his/her duty, perhaps a call to the person above your immediate boss is in order. If you have the rare boss who is actually doing work behind the scenes and you feel you and your needs are being ignored, simp ly asking for help is usually the answer. Maybe when things have slowed down, ask to have a day where your boss shows you what his or her position entails. It will show that you are interested in promotion while also helping you understand all his/her required duties (and whether or not the person is actually fulfilling them).2. The Micro-ManagerMaybe you have the opposite of the ghostthe micro-manager boss. It seems like this persons entire mission in life is to sit over your shoulder and remind you of things you already know. Maybe he or she reminds you via emails or in passing conversation of work that is due hours from now. behauptung kinds of bosses can be especially grating because they can make you feel like a child who needs extra special, around-the-clock surveillance.Dealing with a micro-manager is oftentimes very difficult if he or she has a short fuse. If these types of bosses fly off the handle easily, the best way to deal with them is to over compensate for a while. Tu rn in things early, make sure your job is done and your station is clean well ahead of time. It might mean a few weeks of tough work, but after a while, you will notice you are no longer the target. If the person is more pragmatic, you can usually prove your point by just ignoring your manager when he or she bugs you but still turning in your work on time. As long as you are on time, rarely is there a reason for your boss to bother you, and eventually, he or she will leave you alone.

What To Do When Your Boss Messes with Your Workload

What To Do When Your Boss Messes with Your WorkloadWhat To Do When Your Boss Messes with Your WorkloadWhat To Do When Your Boss Messes with Your WorkloadHeres a scenario Your boss emails you about a project she wants to hand over to you, one that had always been herbei responsibility. Adding insult to injury, its not even part of your regular job. (Example Youre a graphic designer who makes print ads, and your boss wants you to write press releases...wheres the connection?).She wants you to do this because shes swamped with other, more important things (not because its part of your workload, or because itll benefit or challenge you). The problem here? Youre just as swamped as she is, and cant see how youll be able to fit this new project into your schedule. This is where prioritizing your workload becomes hugely important. You know youre swamped, but you dont know exactly how bogged down you are unless you have a clear outline that proves it. By outlining your priorities, you can dete rmine if you can handle this new project, or if you have to push back and ask your boss to come up with another solution. Heres howCreate a list of everything youre working on, plus everything youve been tasked to do as soon as you finish those projects.Note how long each task will take you to complete, then try to find some wiggle room in the list. It helps to know when the new project needs to be completed, along with an estimate of how much time itll suck out of your day(s). Your boss should be able to provide that information. If you cant find a good distribution policy for it, and you dont have the power to decide if you can delay another project in favor of completing the new one, youll have to request your bosss input. Send her the list you created above and simply ask Where do you think this fits in so I can properly prioritize my projects? With luck, youll get a thoughtful response and your boss will have settled the prioritization for you. Otherwise, shell tell you to use yo ur best judgment and youre back to step 2. In that case, youll just have to suck it up and make it work

Industry Advisory Meeting Advances ASMEs Mission in Washingto...

Industry Advisory Meeting Advances ASME̢۪s Mission in Washingto... Industry Advisory Meeting Advances ASME̢۪s Mission in Washingto... ASME̢۪s Mission Advances at Industry Advisory Board Spring Meeting in Washington May 11, 2018 Dr. Lloyd Whitman (at podium), Principal Assistant Director, Physical Sciences and Engineering, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, addresses the attendees of the ASME Industry Advisory Board spring meeting. Fifty-five representatives from industry, government, and academia, ASME leadership and staff, and a host of special guest speakers took part in the ASME Industry Advisory Board (IAB) 2018 spring meeting, which was held April 9-10 in Washington, D.C. The discussion focused on ways the IAB member companies can better engage related to ASMEs strategic technology areas: bioengineering, clean energy, pressure technology, advanced manufacturing and robotics. The meeting began with a dinner at Charlie Palmer Steak, and continued the next day at the Reserve Officers Association on Capitol Hill. At the dinner, ASME President Charla Wise provided opening remarks, and IAB Chair Tommy Gardner, chief technology officer at HP Federal, introduced the following speakers: Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA); Dr. Lloyd Whitman, Principal Assistant Director, Physical Sciences and Engineering, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP); and Shirish Pareek, founder and vice chairman of Hydraulex Global. Rep. Takano, the co-chair of the Congressional Maker Caucus, spoke about the upcoming Congressional Maker Faire, which will be held in June on Capitol Hill. As a former classroom teacher, Takano expressed the importance of scientific and engineering corporations getting involved with local schools, especially those in more economically depressed areas, to help educate the scientific and engineering workforce in the future. He also said more makerspaces should be developed in communities to encourage the process of producing and making items and that libraries are one type of space for doing so. For more information about the Maker Caucus, follow @MakerCaucus on Twitter. Dr. Whitman of OSTP is on detail from his position as Chief Scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Dr. Whitman indicated that roughly 55 staff members currently make up the current OSTP, which is roughly the same size that OSTP was under the George W. Bush administration and during other administrations early in their second year. Dr. Whitman provides senior leadership to OSTP and the National Science and Technology Council for a broad range of science and technology (S&T) areas and national research and development programs, including advanced manufacturing, information technology, and nanotechnology. He also supports the National Security Council with subject matter expertise related to future electronics and U.S. semiconductor industry competitiveness. Alex Gray, special assistant to the president for the Defense Industrial Base, White House Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, discussed the office̢۪s endeavors during its first year as well as its priorities for the rest of 2018. Dr. Whitman explained that OSTP is focused on supporting the presidents priorities in economic prosperity, national security, and government reform, encouraged attendees to visit the Documents and Reports section of the OSTP web site, and to follow OSTP on twitter at @WHOSTP, as there have been several interesting reports released over the past year, i.e. Science and Technology Highlights in the First Year of the Trump Administration. Mr. Pareek of Hydraulex Global spoke about his work on the Manufacturing Council under President Obamas administration, and his current role on the Leadership Council of Mforesight. Mforesight is a Manufacturing USA innovation institute charged with engaging the U.S. manufacturing community to discover, prioritize, develop, and disseminate emerging technologies and manufacturing needs aligned with national priorities. Pareek voiced his support for strengthening the domestic manufacturing supply chain and not losing links in the supply chain to foreign manufacturing. The meeting re-convened the next day with John Koehr, ASME managing director for Technology Advancement and Business Development, and Lester Su, chair of the ASME Committee on Government Relations (CGR), briefing the IAB on how member companies can become more active and involved in ASMEs technology advisory panels (TAPs) and CGR respectively. Dr. Bruce Kramer, senior advisor at the National Science Foundation and representative of the interagency Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office (AMNPO), then convened a stakeholder roundtable with the IAB related to the national advanced manufacturing strategic plan. This roundtable is in response to the recent AMNPO request for information (ROI), which can be found at: https://www.nist.gov/oam/rfi-response. The final guest speaker of the day was Alex Gray from the White House Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, who discussed the offices accomplishments in the first year, and its upcoming priorities for 2018. 8 Tips to Make More Creative Resumes

8 Tips to Make More Creative Resumes 8 Tips to Make More Creative Resumes 13In a competitive job market, job seekers are always looking for the next best thing to help them stand out from the competition. One such way is through the use of creative resumes, and below are eight tips to make creative resumes so you can stand out from the crowd. With more millennials entering the workforce and more focus being put on creativity, some job seekers have taken their resume to a whole new level to get noticed. Through the use of different fonts, styles, and even social media, the creative resume has evolved into a popular way to let your personality show while making HR professionals excited to read about your qualifications. Here are eight tips to make more creative resumes: Font Type and Size: Try varying your font size throughout the resume, using larger sizes for headers. Also, consider using a different style font than the traditional Arial or Times New Roman. Just remember to stick with a font that is easy to read. Bold and Underline: These can be used to help draw attention to headers, as well as important facts within the text of your resume. It helps draw the eye to what you want readers to notice. Resume Formats: Consider skipping the traditional resume format and go with a portfolio style resume, a functional resume, or achievement-based resume style. A Splash of Color: Just a splash of color! You don̢۪t want your resume to look like a school art project. Use the color to highlight important facts or to add a little personality. Fast Facts: Using a fast facts section on your resume can communicate all of your specific fact-based qualifications and accomplishments to hiring managers. While you want to keep other information in the resume, this provides a quick summary of why you are the best. Graphics: As with color use, you don̢۪t want to go overboard and make it difficult to read. Graphics can be used to show your creativity or even to showcase your fast facts! Social Media: Social media is here to stay and is being embraced by business around the world. Adding social media links into your resume is a creative way to get employers to engage with you. Additionally, some people create digital or video resumes to supplement their traditional resume for an extra personal touch. Personality: Don̢۪t forget to add some personality, such as through formatting. After all, employers are looking for people, not drones. Two things to take note of when using creative-looking resumes: you don̢۪t want to overdo it and you want to create a resume for the job you are applying for. The resume needs to be easy for hiring managers to read and relevant to the company and job you are applying for. You want to be remembered for your great resume, not because you frustrated them with an irrelevant or over-the-top creative resume. Readers, do you think using creative-looking resumes will help you get an interview? Let us know in the comment section below!

Data Storage Salesman Follows Two Tracks Across the Pacific

Data Storage Salesman Follows Two Tracks Across the Pacific Data Storage Salesman Follows Two Tracks Across the Pacific To pursue opportunities in the United States and Japan, Mark Suzuki needed two sets of tools.Mark Suzuki was working for a data-storage management company in Japan, looking for a job with the U.S. based company. Whether he’d end up working in the United States or in Japan was up in the air. So he created two different versions of his resume: one for potential employers in Japan, and one for U.S. employers.“The resume styles are different between the U.S. and Japan,” Suzuki said. “In Japan, you show a picture on your resume, and it’s OK to ask your age. Age is a big thing in Japan, people are respectful of elders, so people will put their age on a resume. Not in the U.S.”Those were just some of the things Suzuki had learned while working in Japan for the past four years. He had also had a chance to travel around the Asia-Pacific region, and knew where he would and would not like to work. So, when EMC, the company he had been working for, decided to make some changes in man agement that would have meant a move to Singapore, he decided to look for another job.“I’d already lived in Singapore, and I wasn’t keen on moving back,” he said. “It became clear I needed to make a move outside the company. At that point, I had been with EMC for six years, and I was looking for a new challenge.”So, he left the company at the end of December 2008, unsure of where he would end up, but knowing two things: “I wanted to work for a West Coast company again, and I wanted to get back into software sales.”His former company, EMC, was based in Boston. Suzuki, who is originally from San Francisco, had worked for West Coast companies such as Netscape and Sun Microsystems, and missed software sales. In January, he said, he went back to the United States for about a month, looking around the San Francisco Bay area for possible sales opportunities. “The recession really hit the Bay area hard,” he said. “It’s really rough going there right now.” Compared t o the U.S.’ 9 percent unemployment rate, the unemployment rate in Japan is at 5 percent or 6 percent, he said. While he was in California he realized he would need some extra help finding a job, so he signed up for SalesLadder. “I was a little concerned,” he recalled. “At the time, every front page article in the newspaper was about recession and jobless rates. I knew my timing wasn’t good, but I did have some confidence,” he said, based on the fact that in his past experience, it hadn’t taken him any more than three or four months to find a new job.Suzuki was familiar with the Ladders from an earlier job search. “I was introduced to SalesLadder at least five years ago. Someone sent me a link, and I tried it out then.”He signed up for Ladders in January and noticed there were a lot more sales positions in the Asia-Pacific region than there were on the West Coast. He was pretty certain at that point he’d be heading back to Japan. And once he posted his resume, thin gs started to go pretty quickly. He saw a notice for a sales position for Guidance Software, a company headquartered in Los Angeles. The position, a sales role in Asia Pacific that was based in Japan, fit all of his requirements, so he contacted them. He was still in the U.S. and could travel to Los Angeles to meet with them.In fact, Suzuki had heard from four companies over the month of January while he was in the U.S. Guidance appealed to him in part because of its size, he said. With about 400 employees (compared to EMC’s workforce of 30,000), Guidance is a smaller company than he had worked at before. “We have a lot of work we need to do to grow,” he said. “I have a lot of experience with building up a sales team, and that’s what they are looking to have me do.”Suzuki said he would encourage others to look for jobs in the Asia-Pacific region. He said he saw a lot of American companies posting Asia-Pacific roles on Ladders, and he says that U.S. job seekers have a leg up on those living in Asia. “I don’t know if may of the expat community here are tapping into Ladders,” he said from his office in Tokyo. “People here seem to tap only into the local resources. ”He said while he does speak Japanese, it’s not always a requirement for a job in Asia, India or China. And the international experience is great to have, even if your ultimate goal is to get back to the U.S.In the end, it worked out for both Suzuki and Guidance, his new employer. “They didn’t have to pay for my moving costs. I think that was a win-win for myself and them. For Americans living in the U.S. and looking to take a role outside the U.S., I would recommend it. You get great experience, learn business cultures from so many different countries: China, India, Japan, Singapore, Korea. It’s been a rewarding experience.”

To Leave or Stay How to Tell When Its Time to Quit Your Job

To Leave or Stay How to Tell When It’s Time to Quit Your Job To Leave or Stay How to Tell When It’s Time to Quit Your Job I was recently asked, How do you know when you should quit your job? This is a question many people struggle to answer, while others just quit without thinking about how wise their decision may have been. Investing in a career coach and/or talking to your mentor can help you  figure out whether or not to leave a job. When having these discussions - or when considering your options by yourself - keep the following things in mind: 1. It Is Easier to Get a New Job While Employed Do not abandon your position unless you have a new job lined up. An employment gap on your resume will have the reader wondering whether you were fired or left abruptly. Employee loyalty is still valued. 2. Why Do You Want to Quit Your Job? At your next interview, you will probably be asked, Why did you leave your last job? Youd better have a solid answer. One thing to consider is whether youd like to leave your job for interpersonal reasons or for work-related reasons. Leaving because you feel like your career is stuck may be a good choice, but leaving because you dont like your boss and/or coworkers is a less valid reason. There will always be personality conflicts in the workplace. Learning to deal with difficult coworkers may be a better investment in your future success than quitting your job and looking for another. Know the real reason you are leaving so you dont end up in the same situation at your next job. 3. Can You Afford to Quit? Examine your financial circumstances before giving your two weeks notice. Can you afford to be unemployed for several months? How will the bills get paid? Ensure you have several months of living expenses in a savings account before you decide to quit. Do not sabotage your financial future on a whim. Be financially prepared to leave your job. Financial concerns are especially important for those who work in industries that require security clearances. A low credit score because you couldnt pay your bills on time while unemployed may make you a poor candidate for these jobs. 4. Know What Your Final Paycheck Will Look Like Will you get paid for unused sick days or personal days? Will you be paid for unused leave? If not, then you may want to exhaust these benefits before you put in your two weeks notice. I know several people who were asked to leave as soon  as they put in their two weeks notice. They did not get that final two weeks of pay they had counted on receiving. Your employer is not required to let you work until the day you want to leave. 5. Have You Spoken With Your Supervisor About Why You Want to Leave? Your supervisor  probably doesnt even realize you are unhappy. I recommend you examine why you want to quit and then speak with your supervisor to see if there is a way to make things work. Maybe you can be relocated to a different department, assigned more responsibility, or have your unmet needs fulfilled in some other way. It is expensive for a company to interview, hire, and train a new employee. Your employer would prefer to work with you on making changes so you do not leave. - Take time to reflect on why you want to leave your current place of employment. Often, the reasons a person quits one job are not resolved when they move to a new workplace. Take ownership of why you want to leave. See if you are the source of the problem before making a move. The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Take time to  think through the situation with a coach or mentor before you decide to quit your job. How to be smarter than people smarter than you Read!

How to be smarter than people smarter than you Read! How to be smarter than people smarter than you Read! Are you ready for this big secret?  Read.- - - Thanks for taking your time with this post! If you liked this, please hit the   - Just kidding. I have more to say, of course.- - - Something like 50% of people don’t read a single book after school. Many of these people were “smart” in school. Here’s the thing about “smart” people. They get used to understanding things. They do well in school. They are praised by everyone. Once they reach the open market, advantages suddenly disappear. Not because they are incapable, but because they are lazy.Thank god I’m not very smart.Instead, I cheat. I read the things smart people write down. By deciding to read more, you’ve already become smarter than most “smart people.”For the most part, I cheat by reading in these 4 areas:1. MoneyIt doesn’t really matter whose book you read. People get dogmatic about this, but for basic finance, most best sellers say the same thing.Personally I like: You Are a Badass at Making Money by J en Sincero.Read a book or two, and get a plan. Money isn’t everything, but money management is.I’ve been broke. It sucks. Read about how to not be broke.2. Read about businessDoesn’t matter your career. Learn about how business work. Learn about why businesses work. Learn how to change a business that is not going well. Learn how to start a business from scratch. Here are my favorites: Made to Stick and Switch by Chip and Dan Heath Launch by Jeff Walker Blink by Malcolm Gladwell The Rich Employee by James Altucher 3. Read about lifeOkay so admittedly everything could have gone under this heading so I guess it could more accurately be called “read about human nature”Understanding the human condition is huge for both your own survival and your relationships.Try these: The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman The Power of When by Michael Breus Move your DNA by Katy Bowman Love Does by Bob Goff A Million Miles by Donald Miller 4. Read about healthIn 2014, my gut was deteriorating inside me. I had trouble walking, standing, sitting, and breathing. At 24, my doctor told me “you’ll probably just have to deal with it.”Nobody cares about your health. Not even doctors. They just assume you’ll be fine until you display symptoms worthy of their great talent. Which is okay. That is what they are trained to do.You and only you are responsible for keeping yourself well.Start with: Crazy, Sexy Cancer by Kris Carr Sleep Smarter by Shawn Stevenson (his podcast is great too) The Laura Lea Balanced Cookbook by Laura Lea Goldberg - - - When in doubt, read anything. You’ll be hard pressed to find a book that doesn’t teach you something.Stay focused. Stay balanced. Think, and most importantly:Read. If you like books, you will probably also like this one.- TBThis  article  first appeared on Medium.

Survey This is the best city to retire in this year

Survey This is the best city to retire in this year Survey This is the best city to retire in this year New WalletHub data shows that Orlando, Florida is the best city to retire in this year, with a “total score” of 60.09 out of 100.The company analyzed 182 American cities, “including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state,” in terms of   “activities,” “health care,” “affordability” and “quality of life.”  They then looked at these factors in terms of 46 others before giving each city a score out of 100. WalletHub also used information from the U.S. Census Bureau, among many other sources.Top 10 cities for retirement in 2018With 182 cities on the list, these are at the top:1) Orlando, FL: total score of 60.092) Scottsdale, AZ: total score of 59.363) Tampa, FL: total score of 58.484) Denver, CO: total score of 58.345) Fort Lauderdale, FL: total score of 57.836) Charleston, SC: total score of 57.207) Miami, FL: total score of 56.508) Austin, TX: total score of 55.789) Cape Coral, FL: total score of 55.4810) Tempe, AZ: total score of 55.28Newark, NJ came in last place (#182) with a total score of 33.86.How the cities compare to each otherThe infographic breaks things down.Think about these things when picking a place to retireDaniel Tobias, founder of Passport Wealth Management and a certified financial planner, told WalletHub about what financial things retirees should think about when choosing a location to do so.“The most important factor is to form an idea as to how you want to live your life and what you want that lifestyle to look like. Once that goal is in place, it is easier to narrow down possible locations and then factor in cost,” he told the site. “For example, if you want to ski then the good financial choice may be to retire to Colorado or even Utah, but if you enjoy boating and the beach perhaps Florida would be the better option.“Choosing another location, for purely cost of living reasons, might end up more expensive if it doesn’t offer your desired lifestyle and you find yourself either depressed or traveling more frequently.”

United States Military Weapons of War

United States Military Weapons of War United States Military Weapons of War The main weapons and equipment items used by the United States DoD members are listed below. Listing every weapon in the arsenal would not be practical for an article, so this series will cover the highlights, starting with some of the main weapons and equipment used by the Infantry and Special Operations Units. Then the discussion will turn to military vehicles, including tanks and armor, missiles and artillery, military aircraft, and military ships and submarines. Small Arms M-4 Carbine The M-4 combat assault rifle first entered Army service in 1997. The rifle is the standard weapon used by some Army units such as the 82nd Airborne Division and special operations units, such as ?Army Rangers.   With a shortened barrel and collapsible stock, the M-4 is ideal for close quarter marksmanship where lightweight and quick action are  required. Firing a standard 5.56mm round, the weapon weighs a mere 5.6 lbs. (empty). A revised rear sight allows for better control of the weapon out to the maximum range of the ammunition used. The M4 has also benefited from its customization. Current versions of the rifle offer several attachments, including sight mounts, flashlights, grenade launchers, and shotguns. The M110 Sniper Rifle The M110 was initially deployed for active use by U.S. Army soldiers in Afghanistan in April 2007. Soldiers with Task Force Fury were the first to use the rifle in a real combat zone. The initial response was enthusiastic. Snipers and spotters who used the weapon praised its semi-automatic capabilities as an improvement over previous bolt action rifles that required soldiers to manually reload the weapon’s chamber after each shot. M40A5/6/7 Sniper Rifle It is the preferred sniper rifle for the U.S. Marine Corps. The M40A5 sniper rifle is based on the Remington model 700. It is a heavy barrel, bolt action; magazine-fed 7.62mm rifle that is optimized for accuracy with Match Grade ammunition. The rifle is equipped with a special Schmidt Bender 3â€"12×50mm Police Marksman II LP scope, the rifle weighs approximately 16.5 pounds. It is equipped with a built-in five round magazine. The M-249 official name is the SAW which means Squad Automatic Weapon. Early test versions of the M-249 were plagued with problems, but the current model is considered reliable. The weapon entered Army service in 1987, replacing the M-60 Machine Gun. The M-249 is a .223 cal (5.56mm) gas operated lightweight machine gun which feeds from a belt held in a 100 or 200 rounds box under the gun. This weapon has a plastic pistol grip and a folding stock so it can be kept compact and light. M-240 Machine Gun The M-240 entered Army and Marine Corps service in 1997. The M-240 fires the 7.62mm NATO round.   Advantages of this weapon include its popularity with other nations forces and number of configurations. For example, in a helicopter crash, the M-240d helicopter-mount version could be quickly modified by installing the bipod and buttstock of the M-240b version, which would then allow the weapon to be used for self-defense by the surviving helicopter crew members. The Browning M2 .50 Caliber Machine Gun, Heavy barrel is an automatic, recoil operated, air-cooled machine gun with adjustable headspace and is crew transportable with limited amounts of ammunition over short distances.  This gun has a back plate with spade grips, trigger, and bolt latch release. This gun may be mounted on ground mounts and most vehicles as an anti-personnel and anti-aircraft weapon. The gun is equipped with leaf-type rear sight, flash suppressor, and a spare barrel assembly. Associated components are the M63 antiaircraft mount and the M3 tripod mount. The Joint Service Combat Shotgun is a compact, lightweight, semi-automatic, 12 gauge weapon configured with a standard magazine with a minimum capacity of six 2 3/4 inch cartridges. M1014 Joint Services Combat Shotgun (JSCS) is the US Department of Defense designation of the Benelli M4 Super 90. The M-1014 is constructed of lightweight polymer materials and corrosion resistant metal components. To enhance mission performance and provide increased operator flexibility, the M-1014 is equipped with modular components such as modular stocks in various configurations and modular barrels of various lengths. The MP5-N fires from a closed and locked bolt in either the automatic or semiautomatic modes. This gun is recoil operated and has a unique delayed roller locked bolt system, a retractable buttstock, a removable suppressor, and illuminating flashlight integral to the forward hand guard. The flashlight is operated by a pressure switch custom fitted to the pistol grip. This is the same basic weapon used by the FBIs Hostage Rescue Team and other world-class counter-terrorist organizations. The present inventory includes both suppressed and non-suppressed versions of the MP5. The basic configuration of this weapon makes for an ideal size, weight, and capable (accuracy, lethality, reliability, etc.) close quarters battle weapon system. Hand Grenades Hand grenades are small bombs, containing explosives or chemicals, that can be thrown by hand or rigged as booby traps.  There are several varieties of hand grenades designed for many purposes. All of these grenades can be broadly classified into six general types: fragmentation, illumination, chemical, incendiary, smoke, and practice and training grenades. The M67 fragmentation grenade is the standard grenade used by the U.S. Military. It has a smooth, sheet-metal body and is shaped like a ball. Its outer case is lined on the inside with a serrated wire recoil. It is filled with 6.5 ounces of an explosive, known as Composition B, and uses a detonating type of fuse. When the detonator causes Composition B to explode, fragments of the body and fuse assembly are hurled in all directions. The M67 weighs 14 ounces, and the average man can throw it 40 meters. The effective casualty-producing radius is 15 meters. Small Missiles and Mortars FIM-9 Stinger Missile The Stinger weapon system is a man-portable (34.5 pounds), shoulder-fired, supersonic missile system designed to counter high speed, low-level, ground attack aircraft. The Stinger is effective against helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and observation and transport aircraft. Once fired, the Stinger uses proportional navigation algorithms to guide the missile to a predicted intercept point. The Stinger missile can be used as a man-portable air defense system (MANPAD) when the weapon is fired from the gunner’s shoulder, mounted aboard the Avenger weapons system, or mounted in the light armored vehicle-air defense variant (LAV-AD). The M252 81mm Medium Extended Range Mortar is a crew-served, medium weight mortar which is highly accurate and provides for a greater range (4,500 meters to 5,650 meters) and lethality than the previous 81mm mortar. The cannon has a crew-removable breech plug and firing pin. This mortar also uses the standard M64 mortar sight of the M-224 60mm mortar. The M252 is ideally suited to support airborne, air assault, mountain and light infantry units. The M-252 Mortar is used by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps. M-224 Lightweight Mortar The M224 60mm Lightweight Mortar is a smooth bore, muzzle loading, high-angle-of-fire weapon. The cannon assembly is composed of the barrel, combination base cap, and firing mechanism. The mount consists of a bipod and a base plate which is provided with screw type elevating and traversing mechanisms to elevate/traverse the mortar. The M64 sight unit is attached to the bipod mount via a standard dovetail. An additional short-range sight is attached to the base of the cannon tube for firing the mortar on the move and during assaults. It has a spring-type shock absorber to absorb the shock of recoil in firing. AT4 Anti-Armor Weapon The M136 AT4 is the Army and Marine Corps primary light anti-tank weapon. The M136 AT4 is a recoilless rifle used primarily by Infantry Forces for engagement and defeat of light armor. The recoilless rifle design permits accurate delivery of an 84mm High Explosive Anti-Armor warhead, with negligible recoil. The M136 AT4 is a lightweight, self-contained, anti-armor weapon consisting of a free-flight, fin-stabilized, rocket-type cartridge packed in an expendable, one-piece, fiberglass-wrapped tube. The M136 AT4 is man-portable and is fired from the right shoulder only. The launcher is watertight for ease of transportation and storage. Multi-Purpose Assault Weapon MOD 2 The Shoulder-Launched Multi-Purpose Assault Weapon (SMAW) is designed to destroy bunkers and other fortifications during assault operations as well as other designated targets with the dual mode rocket and to destroy main battle tanks with the HEAA rocket. The SMAW is an 83mm man-portable weapon system with High Explosive, Dual Purpose (HEDP) rocket and is effective against bunkers, masonry and concrete walls, and light armor. The High Explosive Anti-Armor (HEAA) rocket is effective against current tanks without additional armor. The 9mm spotting rounds are ballistic matches to the rockets and increase the gunners first round hit probability. The Dragon Weapon System is designed to engage and destroy armor and light armored vehicles. The weapon is also effective against hard targets such as bunkers and field fortifications.   The warhead power of Dragon makes it possible for a single Marine or soldier to defeat armored vehicles, fortified bunkers, concrete gun emplacements, or other hard targets. The launcher consists of a smoothbore fiberglass tube, breech/gas generator, tracker and support, bipod, battery, sling, and forward and aft shock absorbers. Non-integral day and night sights are required to utilize the Dragon. TOW Missile System The tube-launched, optically-tracked, wire-guided (TOW) missile is a crew-portable, vehicle-mounted, heavy anti-armor weapon system consisting of a launcher and one of five versions of the TOW missile. It is designed to defeat armored vehicles and other targets such as field fortifications from ranges up to 3,750 meters. After firing the missile, the gunner must keep the crosshairs of the sight centered on the target to ensure a hit. The system will operate in all weather conditions in which the gunner can see a target throughout the missile flight by using either a day or night sight. Individual Equipment AN/PVS-14 Night Vision Device (Generation 3) AN/PVS-14 Monocular Night Vision Device (MNVD) is a light-weight, third generation night vision device that gives the soldier the operational advantage to “see at night.” NVDs (known also as Night Vision Goggles) are electro-optical devices that intensify (or amplify) existing light instead of relying on a light source of their own. The devices are sensitive to a broad spectrum of light, from visible through infrared. When a soldier looks through a NVD, an amplified electronic image is seen on a phosphor screen, giving the soldier the ability to operate with little or no illumination from the moon, stars, or other ambient light sources. The PVS-14 system can be used with the head mount or with a Kevlar helmet mount. U.S. Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate  (NVESD) is part of the governing body that dictates the name of the generation of  night vision  technologies. The U.S. Army has not yet authorized the use of the name GEN-IV night vision technology. MOLLE Vest MOLLE is an Army and Marine Corps item that replaces the aging ALICE (All-purpose, Lightweight, Individual Carrying Equipment) pack and Integrated Individual Fighting System introduced in 1988. One of the main components of the MOLLE system is the nylon mesh vest that has removable pockets to accommodate different carrying needs. Some of the new technology centers on the MOLLEs frame.  A new anatomically-contoured frame made with plastic originally used in automobile bumpers has dramatically increased durability, functioning in temperatures ranging from -40 to 120 degrees F. MOLLE also advances load-carrying ability with its new suspension system. Heavily-padded shoulder straps and waist belt are adjustable for varying torso lengths, eliminating the two sizes of ALICE. Additionally, the Fighting Load Carrier (FLC) replaces the Load Bearing Equipment (LBE) web belt and suspenders of the ALICE. Flak Vest In October of 2002, the Army and Marine Corps began issuing a new Kevlar flak vest that is 35 percent lighter than the previous version. The 16.4-pound Interceptor system consists of a tactical vest and a pair of small arms protective inserts. The Kevlar vest includes detachable neck and groin guards, while the ceramic plates slide into pockets on the front and rear. By itself, the Interceptor vest insulates a soldier from shrapnel and 9-mm pistol rounds. When the protective inserts are added, the system acts as a ballistic barrier to 7.62-mm rifle ammunition. The previous flak vest only offered protection against fragmentation. The Interceptors inter-changeable components give troops the ability to dress to the level of a particular threat. Applications include combat operations, peace-keeping missions and field-training exercises. Regardless of the situation, Body Armor functions as an effective defense against mines, grenades, mortar shells, artillery fire and rifle projectiles.  The Interceptor system allows commanders increased capability in the areas of survivability and maneuverability.

Coffee can reduce risk of developing Alzheimers, Parkinsons
